Final procurement package for Thames Tideway Tunnel released

The invitation to tender for the third and final Central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel has now been sent out.

The project has been split geographically into three main construction contracts, with the three packages worth a total of up to 2.3 billion: the West estimated at up to 500 million, the East at up to 800 million and Central being the largest at up to 950 million.

The 25 kilometre tunnel will help tackle the problem of overflows from Londons Victoria sewers and will protect the River Thames from increasing pollution for at least 100 years.

Subject to the development application being granted, construction on the project will begin in 2016 across 24 construction sites in the capital.

With the successful bidders expected to be announced in May 2015, Thames Tideway Tunnel managing director Mike Gerrard believes that the project will receive competitive bids that will result in the best value for customers.

He said: We are building for a 22nd Century London to create a cleaner, healthier River Thames. The Tunnel is needed to tackle the tens of millions of tonnes of raw sewage which discharge into the tidal River Thames every year.

The project is expected to create a further 9,000 jobs with around 500 people already working on the Thames Tideway Tunnel.
